Context & Problem

Context & Problem

During my second year at Reichman University, I identified a prevalent issue in many pet shelters: outdated operational methods, such as cumbersome paperwork and tedious scheduling. Staff frequently worked late, trying to coordinate volunteers for fostering. Consequently, their work productivity was low, leaving many animals without a home.

Objectives & Goals

Objectives & Goals

The primary goal was to enhance pet shelter operations with a tablet-based application. Centralizes volunteer management, pet initiatives, medical treatments, events and data organization. Minimizes manual efforts and offers an intuitive interface for easy staff adaptation.

Key Research Activities & Insights

Objective: To gain a comprehensive insight into the workings of animal adoption associations, focusing on the adoption processes, the plight of abandoned animals, and holistic care.

  1. Interview with Marina:

    • ssociation Structure: I delved deep into the organization's structural framework.

    • Information Collection: I uncovered the nature and methodology of data aggregation related to each animal.

    • Adoption Days: I came to understand the critical stages of adoption days and how animals are connected to potential adopters and foster homes.

    • Marina's Perspective: Marina's daily experiences enriched my understanding, shedding light on the nuances of running a foster home and the care and management of abandoned animals.

  2. Digital Research:

    • "SOS חיות" Website: This platform served as a pivotal reference, inspiring my research direction.

    • Facebook Community Engagement: Groups like "Dog Foster Homes" and related cat adoption forums provided actionable insights. These platforms revealed interactions among adopters, managers, volunteers, and animals. They also highlighted special events and showcased animals up for adoption.

  3. Expert Consultation:

    • Interview with Dr. David Canaan: I tapped into the expertise of veterinarian Dr. Canaan to broaden my scope. His experiences with animal foster homes unveiled the stories of lost or abandoned animals. His insights encompassed their medical needs and overall aspects of animal health, grooming, and behavior.

Outcome: This research provided a 360-degree perspective on animal adoption, integrating on-ground experiences, digital insights, and expert opinions. Through this project, I understood both the administrative and empathetic aspects of animal care and adoption.
